Rhinos are part of the Big Five, which consist of leopards,
lions, elephants, buffalos and rhinos, which are amazing animals.
They live in grasslands and forests, but always stay around
places that contain water, as they need to drink it every
day. They are vegetarians and so other animals are at no risk
of being eaten by them. However they can be extremely dangerous
animals. Their horns are made form thin strands of hair that

Although their horns are made from hair they are extremely
strong. Rhinos are also short sighted. They have heavy, thick
skin, which is infected by numerous parasites. That's why
when you see a rhino, there are sometimes tick birds standing
on the rhino and eating the ticks. The two most common types
of rhino are the white rhino, and the black rhino. The white
rhino, unlike other species, are lighter colored and are very
easily scared off. Unfortunately, they are only found in a
few game parks. Kenya is lucky to have a few of them here
in some of the game parks. The black rhino however, is fiercer
and not so easily frightened. They are darker in color, and
are more commonly found.
Rhinos in Africa are decreasing rapidly because of poachers.
The poachers come and kill the rhinos for their ivory, which
they sell. Several programs have been set up for this and
are helping the rhinos, but they are still being hunted down.
Such programs have been set up in Kenya by Karen Blixon, and
other people who are trying to save the rhinos from extinction
